Asparagus

We carry productive, two-year-old XL Asparagus crowns (not seed). These crowns will allow for a much quicker establishment of an asparagus bed compared to seed. It is recommended to plant asparagus crowns in year one. Very limited harvesting in year two. Then full harvesting from then on. These crowns are very large and healthy compared to store-bought varieties.

Most asparagus varieties grow in well-drained soil (not wet clay). Planting and care instructions will be provided. Asparagus is a heavy feeder that needs fertilizing at least once each year. We will have packets of fertilizer available in Spring if desired.

Mary Washington

Asparagus officinalis 'Mary Washington' | Zones 3-9 | Soil: Sandy, Loamy, Well-Drained

Mary Washington is an heirloom asparagus (not a hybrid) that produces large, green stalks earlier than other varieties of asparagus. There are usually male and female plants with the female plants producing red seed berries each year.

Millennium

In the past decade Millennium has emerged as the top choice for asparagus varieties across the upper Midwest. It is high yielding, long lived, cold hardy, and adaptable to a wide range of soils.

Purple Passion

Asparagus officinalis 'Purple Passion' | Zones 3-8 | Soil: Sandy, Loamy, Well-Drained

Purple Passion produces attractive purple spears which have a mild, nutty flavor and are somewhat ‘sweeter’ than other asparagus varieties. The tender spears turn green when cooked.

Asparagus Fertilizer

Asparagus requires adequate fertilization for a thicker more vigorous crop.
