Canadian Hemlock
Tsuga canadensis | Zones 3-8 | Soil: Loam, Moist, Sandy, Well-Drained
A top choice for privacy screen and hedges due to its ability to accept being sheared to any shape or height. Tolerant of a wide range of sunlight from full sun to full shade. Prefers a mix of both sun/shade. An excellent choice for deer cover as well as for songbird nesting.
Dawn Redwood
Metasequoia glyptostroboides | Zones 4-8 | Soil: Widely Adaptable
One of the fastest growing trees available, Dawn Redwood is considered a deciduous conifer (like a Tamarack). It is a large tree – often reaching 70-100’ tall or more. The fern-like feathery foilage emerges light green in Spring and changes to dark green throughout the summer. Note: This is a zone 4/5 tree. It is not recommended for Central WI or north.
