For landowners looking for an easy, low-maintenance screen that deer rarely bother, Miscanthus is one of the most effective choices available.

Giant Miscanthus

Miscanthus x giganteus | Zones 4-9 | Soil: Sandy, Loamy, Well-Drained

Giant Miscanthus is a woody perennial grass native to Asia that typically grows to heights of 12’ plus. It produces bamboo-like stalks which average 3/8” in diameter. It is a non-invasive grass that does NOT produce viable seeds. Because of the huge yields it produces per acre, miscanthus is used primarily for bio-fuel production as well as for screening deer plots. Miscanthus is a cold hardy grass that grows rapidly, has low nutrient requirements and has few pests or diseases.

It does NOT produce viable seeds and is a solid NON-INVASIVE option for deer hunters. It does NOT like wetter areas. It needs full/mostly full sun, adequate watering, and minimal competition to thrive.

We list it as Zones 4-9 to mirror the official white sheets, but we hear much better results from zones 4B+ than anywhere north/colder than that.

100 Rhizomes planted 18” apart / 3 rows wide will be enough to plant a 50’ row.
